The son of Norman S. Altman and Sophie B. Altman, Robert was born on 23 February 1947 in Washington, D.C. His father worked as an investor and a real estate lawyer after graduating from Harvard High School. Similarly, his mother worked as a television producer and created a program.

In addition, Norman also co-founded the law firms Krooth and Altman. Robert A. Altman relocated to Cleveland park and joined Woodrow Wilson High School. Similarly, he joined the University of Wisconsin to earn Bachelor’s degree. Afterward, he moved back to D.C and received a Juris Doctor degree from George Washington University Law School in 1971.

Afterward, Altman joined hand with Christopher Weaver and co-founded ZeniMax Media as the parent holding company for Bethesda Softworks. Weaver served as a chief technical officer and Altman served as a CEO.
