His father, Ben Heineman is a lawyer, whereas his mother, Cristine Russell is a science journalist. Grew up in New Cannan, Connecticut, he studied at New Cannan Country School and Brunswick School in Greenwich. At first, he wanted to establish his career as a teacher.

Heineman later directed the 2015 documentary about the Mexican drug trade titled Cartel Land. The film won Best Director U.S. Documentary and Documentary Special Jury Award. His other films are City of Ghosts (2017) and A Private War (2018).
