Janet Langhart was born as Janet Leola Langhart on December 22, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana, the USA. She is the daughter of Mary Bridges and Sewell Bridges. She is American by nationality and belongs to mixed ethnicity.

As a child, Janet lived with her mother in an Indianapolis Housing Project. Her mother used to work as a maid and hospital ward secretary. Taking about Janet’s parents, they were never married, but they formed a relationship at a young age. Janet’s father served in World War II, and when the war ended, her father abandoned his family.

Later her mother got married to a Baptist preacher, but their marriage didn’t last long and got divorced. After the divorce, her mother raised Janet and her two siblings. Janet has one brother and one sister.

Langhart is a married woman, whereas she was married to Senator William Cohen. The couple first met during a long-distance interview when Langhart was based in Boston, and Cohen was a Congressman for Maine.

At first, the couple didn’t meet in person until she worked for BET in Washington, D.C. During that time, one of the politicians named Andrew Young set up an interview for her with William. Upon divorce with Melvin, she married for the second time with her partner Dr. Robert Kistner in 1978. Robert was a professor at Harvard Medical School who specialized in the treatment of endometriosis. The couple stayed together for a decade, and later on, Langhart filed for divorce in 1989.
