Kathrine Switzer was born on January 5, 1947, in Amberg, Germany. She is the daughter of Homer Switzer and Virginia Switzer. She holds a Germany-American nationality and belongs to white ethnicity. Her father was a major in the United States Army. When Switzer turned two years, her family moved to the United States in 1949.

Switzer completed her high school education from George C.Marshall High School in Fairfax County, Virginia. Later she attended Lynchburg College. In 1967 she moved to the University of Syracuse where she studied journalism and English literature. There she obtained a bachelor’s degree in 1968 and a master’s degree in 1972.
