Forde played football with Gary Barnett during his sophomore and junior years in Air Academy High School from 1980 to 1981. Later, he graduated from the University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri in 1987.

Pat Forde started his career as a journalist working for The Courier-Journal, where his writing won many awards in 1987. In addition, he worked there as a reporter and then, began writing columns for 12 years. In 2004, Forde left The Courier-Journal to join ESPN for full-time after freelancing for their website for about 7 years.
During the NCAA football season, Pat wrote a column, Forde Yard Dash, and also wrote a column, Forde Minutes during the NCAA basketball season.
