On 22 November 1963, for NBC News, MacNeil covered the visit of President John F. Kennedy to Dallas.  MacNeil began reporting American and European affairs for the BBC in 1967. He hosted the Washington Week news debate program in Review on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), from 1971 to 1974. MacNeil rose to fame during his coverage of the 1973 Senate Watergate hearings with PBS, for which he later received an Emmy Award.
