Michael York was born in a celebrity family where his mother, Florence Edith May Chown was a musician. His father, Joseph Gwynne Johnson is a former royal Artillery British Army officer. Michael grew up along with his elder sister, Penelope Anne. Also, he has a sister Caroline who was born a twin with Bridget. His sister, Bridget died after some hours from her birth.

Amyloidosis is a disease caused by the abnormal production of insoluble proteins. He also visited London and went to the Royal Free Hospital for the cure of the disease.
Struggling with one of the rare diseases, Michael went to Cedars-Sinai Hospital where it was reported that he could have multiple myeloma which is also called bone marrow cancer in another term. Finally, he went through an autologous stem cell transplant advised by Dr. Robert Kyle in Minnesota. Once in an interview, he said:
I’ve been reprieved. I don’t know about cured because it can come back. It’s like night and day to get your enthusiasm back, to be able to travel. I’m not looking normal – I could put makeup on but I don’t see the point. This is me now and when people ask about it, I’m able to tell them.
Michael also added that he doesn’t feel ill and tired. However, the rings under his eyes are still there.
