Barbara Ehrenreich was born on August 26, 1941, in Butte, Montana, to father Ben Howes Alexander, and mother Isabelle Oxley. Further, she has a brother- Ben Alexander Jr as well as a sister Diane Alexander.

After completing her elementary education, Barbara completed her graduation in 1963 from Reed College. Furthermore, she attended Rockefeller University in theoretical physics but later converted to biology. Afterwards, Ehrenreich completed her PhD in cellular immunology in 1968.
