A native of Lengdorf, Styria, Austria, Christine Kaufmann was born on 11 January 1945. Her mother, Geneviève Kaufmann was a French make-up artist whereas her father, Johannes Kaufmann, was a German Luftwaffe officer as well as engineer. Also, she had Circassian ancestry.

Growing up in Munich, Bavaria, she became a ballerina at the Munich Opera.

Kaufmann started her acting career at the tender age of seven in The White Horse Inn in 1952. Further, she appeared in a lead role in Der Schweigende Engel the same year but rose to fame with Rose-Girl Resli in 1954.   Likewise, she achieved international recognition after starring in The Last Days of Pompeii (1959) in Town Without Pity (1961).

Kaufmann resumed her acting career, which she had interrupted during her marriage with Curtis. Later, she worked with German director Helmut Dietl in the satirical television series Monaco Franze – Der ewige Stenz.

Kaufmann had married four times in her entire life. She first tied the knot with her Taras Bulba-co star Tony Curtis, when she was just 18 in 1963.

On 19 July 1964, they had their first child a daughter, Alexandra and there second daughter and Allegra was born on 11 July 1966.

However, Christine Kaufmann and Curtis divorced in 1968. After that, she married television director Achim Lenz in 1974 which ended later two years.

In 1979, she exchanged the wedding vows with musician and actor Reno Eckstein 1979. Nevertheless, the couple parted ways in 1982.

Likewise, her fourth marriage was with illustrator Klaus Zey in 1997. The couple divorced in 2011.

On 28 March 2017, Kaufmann died at age 72, due to of leukemia in Munich only a few days after she was diagnosed with the disease. From her 40s until her death, Kaufmann was called the “most beautiful grandmother in Germany.”
