As a child, Wineland enjoyed performing and appeared in The Music Man at the age of four. When she turned 14, her lungs failed, and she was placed in a medically-induced coma. Having only 1% chance of survival she awoke after 16 days.

She then founded the Claire’s Place Foundation, an organization in support of families affected by terminal illness, especially cystic fibrosis. The foundation has provided financial assistance to 26 families to date.

Furthermore, Wineland was selected to be the keynote speaker at the AARC Congress, the 63^rd International Respiratory Exhibition, and Convention. Also, she was a TEDx speaker who has spoken at some conference worldwide. She also wrote the book Every Breath I Take, Surviving and Thriving with cystic fibrosis.

Additionally, she made her appearance in an episode of Red Band Society as well as in the documentary series My Last Days. On 26^th August 2018, Wineland had a stroke due to a blood clot. Later seven days she died, aged 21, at 6:00 PM, at the UC San Diego Thornton Pavillion, after a double-lung transplant. Her organs were donated to those in need, as she had signed up to be an organ donor.
