Derek Brockway was born on October 29, 1967, in Wales. Further, there is no information about his early life, parents & siblings. He went to Holton Road Primary School for primary education. Later from 1979 to 1986, he joined Barry Boys Comprehensive  School to study A-Levels in mathematics physics and geology. Right after getting a degree, Derek worked for air traffic control at Cardiff Airport, Birmingham Airport.

After getting some experience by reporting weather to air traffic control, Derek quit the job and went to  Coleg Morgannwg in Pontypridd and Reading College of Technology to get BTEC Higher National Certificate in mathematics, statistics, and physics. In 1996, Derek joined Birmingham Weather Centre at London where he had his first experience of TV, broadcasting on GMTV. Later in September 1997, Brockway joined BBC Wales Today by replacing  Helen Willetts.
