His father Phil Myrtvedt is Irish while his mother Mary T. “Maureen” Purcell is a Norwegian of French descent.

The family of Purcell moved to Bondi, New South Wales in Australia in 1972 where Dominic attended Blaxland East Public School. Also, he attended Blaxland High School and St Dominic’s College, McCarthy Catholic College, Emu Plains. Later, he joined the Australian Theatre for Young People and then enrolled at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
