She is none other than Doris Roberts. Although she left this world a long time back, she is still in the heart of her fans and audience. Well, Doris was an American actress, author, and philanthropist.

Roberts received five Emmy Awards and a  Screen Actors Guild award from her career spanned six decades of television and film.

Early Life of Doris Roberts

Doris was born on November 4, 1925, in St.Louis, Missouri. She is the daughter of Ann and Larry Green. Doris was raised in The Bronx, New York by her mother and her maternal grandparents after her father deserted the family.

Moreover, she attended The Neighbourhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City to study acting.

Rise to Fame

Doris’ career in acting began in 1951 after she played a role on the TV series Studio One. From 1962-1963, she appeared in an episode of The Naked City.  Her other television series includes Straight Theatre, Suspense, Look Up and Live, ‘Way Out, Ben Casey, CBS Playhouse and Soap.

Roberts made her film debut from 1961’s Something Wild. Afterward, she had dozens of movies in her name and some of them are, Barefoot in the Park, No Way to Treat a Lady, Little Murders, A New Leaf and The Rose. She played Rose Fielder in 2006 film Keeping Up with the Steins alongside, Jami Gertz, Miranda Cosgrove, and Garry Marshall.

Doris Roberts had a net worth of $14 million until she was alive. She earned this fortune from her career as an actress, author, and philanthropist. Moreover, she had worked on a number of hit movies and television series that had made a good box office collection.

Since the actress is no longer among us, she exceeded net worth and earnings to her family. Despite earning such fortune, the star hasn’t revealed the details about her salary and other properties she had. Besides acting, she had a keen interest in cooking and wrote a book Are You Hungry, Dear? Life, Laughs, and Lasagna(2005), co-written with Danelle Morton.

One of her movie, Madea’s Witness Protection has a box office collection of $67 million while the total budget of the movie is $20 million.

Charity Works

Doris was a registered Democrat and on September 4, 2002, she testified before U.S Congressional Panel. Roberts worked with the Puppies Behind Bars program, which works with prisoners to train guide dogs and support dogs for physically handicapped and elderly people, as well as dogs trained in bomb detection to be used by law enforcement agencies.

Doris also served as a chairwoman for the Children with AIDS Foundations.

Married Twice

Emmy Award-winning actress, Doris Roberts was married twice in her life. She first tied the knot with her long-time boyfriend turned husband Michael Cannata. Their wedding ceromany was held in 1956 in a private ceromany hall. Although the couple had a good beginning, their relationship didn’t last for long. Unfortunately, the two divorced in 1962.

After splitting with Michael, Doris began dating Willia Goyen. The couple exchanged their wedding vows in 1963, a year later her divorce. The couple was together until Goyen died in 1983 from leukemia.

Three Grandchildren

Doris Roberts was a proud mother of a son Michael Cannata, Jr(born 1957). He is the son of Doris and her first husband Michael Cannata. In addition, she had three grandchildren, Kelsey Cannata, Andrew Cannata, and Devon Cannata.

Causes of Death

Doris died on April 17, 2016, in her sleep following a stroke at the age of 90. Before her death, she had pulmonary hypertension.
