Jerry Alan West a.k.a. Jerry West is an American retired basketball player who played professionally entirely for the Los Angeles Lakers, having selected in 1960 in round one as a 2nd overall of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Upon his retirement as a player, West coached the team Lakers from 1976–1979.

Jerry West Bio (Age and Height)

A native of Chelyan, West Virginia, Jerry West was born on 28th May 1938. Regarding his nationality, West is an American and belongs to white ethnicity.

His father, Howard Stewart West, was a coal mine electrician whereas his mother, Cecil Sue West, was a housemaker. He grew up alongside his five siblings: Patricia Noel, Charles West, Barabar West, David West, and Hannah Bowman.

As a child, West was aggressive. Later his brother’s death during the Korean War aged twenty-one changed him to a shy and introverted boy when West was around 12 or 13 years old. Additionally, he was so weak, frail, and small that he needed lots of vitamin injections from the doctor and was kept apart from children’s sport.

Early Life and Education

Growing up, West spent his days shooting at a basketball hoop. For high school, he enrolled at East Bank High School from 1952-56. In his first year, West was benched due to his lack of height. During the summer of 1953, he grew to six feet and soon became the captain of the freshman team.

Furthermore, West became the team’s starting small forward, and West promptly established himself as one of the finest West Virginia high school players at the time. From 1953-56, he was named All-State, then All-American. In 1956 he was named the West Virginia Player of the Year, becoming the state’s first high-school player to record over 900 points in a season, with an average of 32.2 points per game.

Upon graduation from East Bank High School in 1956, West was offered by more than 60 universities. But he eventually chose to stay in his home state and joined West Virginia University (WVU), in Morgantown. He played three seasons for the university, playing in total 93 games with 1240 rebounds, 261 assists, and 2309 points.

Career

West was picked 1st in 1960 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. He played 14-year with the Los Angeles Lakers. His NBA career was highly successful, playing at the guard position. Outstandingly, West was voted 12 times into the All-NBA First and Second Teams. Furthermore, he was elected into the NBA All-Star Team 14 times, as well as was selected as the All-Star MVP in 1972. That same year, he won the only title of his career.

Moreover, Jerry holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series with 46.3. Also, he was a member of the first five NBA All-Defensive Teams, which were introduced when he was 32 years old.

Having played in nine NBA Finals, West is the only player in NBA history to be named Finals MVP. Additionally, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980. In 1996, he was voted as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history. Also, he was the co-captain of the 1960 U.S. Olympic gold medal team, a team that was inducted as a unit into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.

At the age of thirty-six, in 1974, West retired due to contract disagreements with Cooke. He filed a suit for unpaid back wages. But, West wanted to re-negotiate his contract and keep playing. At the time of his departure, Jerry had scored more points than any Laker in NBA history.

After Retirement

After his playing career ended, West went on to serve as head coach of the Lakers for three years. He led Los Angeles into the playoffs each year and received a Western Conference Finals berth once. Working as a player-scout for three years, he was named general manager of the Lakers before the 1982–83 NBA season.

Under his leadership, Los Angeles won six championship rings. Furthermore, West became general manager of the Memphis Grizzlies in 2002. More, he helped the franchise win their first-ever playoff berths.
