Jet Bussemaker was born on January 15th, 1961, in Capelle aan den IJssel, Netherlands. She completed her primary & secondary level from the local school of Oegstgeest. She completed her MSc degree in political science from the University of Amsterdam. Bussemaker received her Ph.D. degree in political & social-cultural sciences from the same university in 1993.

Bussemaker began her career as an assistant professor of political science at the University of Amsterdam. She joined the University in 1993 & worked there until 1998.
Bussemaker was a member of GreenLeft party. But left the party to join the Dutch Labour Party.

Bussemaker was elected to the House of Representatives in the year of 1998 elections. In 2000, she became the co-initiator of a proposal to allow conscientious objection to serving on Sundays. The next proposal became law in 2002. Additionally, Bussemaker remained an assistant professor during her membership at House of Representatives, now at VU University of Amsterdam.
