John Nettles was born as John Vivian Drummond Nettles on 11 October 1943 in St Austell, Cornwall, England. He is English by nationality and belongs to white ethnicity. His mom was an Irish nurse who came to work in Great Britain during the Second World War. John was adopted by carpenter Eric Nettles and his wife Elsie Nettles.

Moreover, he enrolled at St Austell Grammar School. In 1992, he learned history and philosophy at the University of Southampton. At there he performed as an actor, and after graduation, he joined the Royal Court Theatre.
