Jurnee Smollett-Bell was born on October 1, 1986, in New York City, New York, USA to parents Janet Smollett and Joel Smollett. She belongs to a family immigrated from Russia and Poland. Her father was Jewish while her mother is African-American. She has five siblings, including a sister, Jazz, and four brothers, Jussie, JoJo, Jake, and Jocqui.

Jurnee started her acting career with the role of Denise Frazer on the ABC family drama series Full House and Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper. She later co-starred in the short-lived ABC sitcom On Our Own alongside her siblings from 1994 to 1995. Jurnee made her big screen debut with 1996’s Francis Ford Coppola film Jack.

Later in 1997, Jurnee played 10-year-old Eve in Eve’s Bayou opposite Debbi Morgan, Samuel L. Jackson and, Lynn Whitfield.

Jurnee has starred as an adult in movies like The Great Debaters (2007) and Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor (2013). The 31-year-old actress had also appeared in numerous television series including NBC‘s Friday Night Lights (2009–2011), and HBO‘s True Blood (2013–2014).

Smollett has currently been playing a leading role as Rosalee in the WGN America period drama Underground since 2016. She received critical acclaim for her performance in Eve’s Bayou (1997). She has received a total of three NAACP Image Awards.

Because of her work on ‘Eve’s Bayou’, Jurnee won the Critic’s Choice Award and was nominated for the NAACP Image Award. In the following year, she joined the CBS sitcom Cosby, for which she has received two NAACP Image Award.

As for the personal life of Jurnee, she has been married for more than seven years; they tied the knot on October 24, 2010. After six long years of their marriage, the couple welcomed their first child, a baby boy on October 31, 2016, and they have named their adorable son Hunter Zion Bell.

Inspired by the HIV/AIDS survivor Hydeia Broadbent, Jurnee has been active in HIV/AIDS causes since 1997 when she was only 11; they worked together for HIV/AIDS awareness. The two also worked for Red Cross and Black AIDS Institute. The actress was first encountered with the disease at the age of seven when a crew member of On Our Own died of HIV AIDS.
