Short Description of Otto Warmbier

Otto Frederick Warmbier is an American citizen who is imprisoned in North Korea after having been punished and jailed almost 15 years hard labor from the age of 21 for “hostile acts against the DPRK”. He was arrested for the alleged crime of a political announcement poster, on Jan 2, 2016, during the period of the tour in North Korea with an independent travel company. Warmbier remains jailed in North Korea. It is unclear whether Warmbier will complete the full 15-year punishment.

Early life

Warmbier was on born Dec 12, 1994, grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio. He graduated from Wyoming High School in 2013. Warmbier move to study a double major degree in commerce and economics at the University of Virginia. At Wyoming, he played varsity soccer and graduated as Salutatorian.

Career (Travel)

Regarding his travel career, he walked to North Korea as a tourist with Young Pioneer Tours. During his travel, he is declared to have stolen a propaganda sign from a staff-only floor in the Yanggakdo International Hotel in Pyongyang, that time, he was staying with approximately 100 other Westerners, and other American citizens as well.
North Korea’s news agency released a video purporting to prove the theft itself on March 18, 2016, In the 18-second low-resolution video, a shaded figure all are removed from the wall and places from the floor, But this action is shown twice, followed by a higher-resolution picture of the sign on the wall.

Warmbier was arrested during in the process of departing North Korea from Pyongyang airport on 2 January. His crime was called an ‘act of hostility against the state’ through the North Korean government. On Feb 29, 2016, he related to stealing a piece of North Korean propaganda to take back to the United States as a ‘trophy’ for somebody by his hometown church who gave to pay him for it with the gift of a car worth $10,000. The sign said, ‘Let’s arm ourselves strong with Kim Jong-il’s patriotism!’ Kim Jong-il was the father of current leader Kim Jong-un.
