His mother Jo was a Welsh artist, classically trained pianist, and waitress. Similarly, his dad, John Frederick Sewell was an Anglo-Australian animator and former builder’s labourer. His parents parted their ways when Rufus was just five.
He studied at Trafalgar Junior School, a state junior school in Twickenham. Later, he went to Orleans Park School and West Thames College. He later attended the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.

Soon after graduation, he started to play at the Central School of Speech and Drama. He made his breakthrough in 1993 after playing the role of Tim in the film Dirty Weekend.
