Three weeks ago I had never worked out in only a sports bra, let alone posed for pictures in one. I’m very self conscious about my abs. (Please, PLEASE don’t fill my mentions with “pick me up” compliments. That’s not what this post is for.) While superficial, it was still a genuine fear. As 2018 comes to a close, most of us will set some kind of resolution. I hate resolutions. The act suggests we need to be fixed because we aren’t fine the way we are right now. Notice I said “the way we are RIGHT NOW”; my language is deliberate because we are all a work in progress. The problem with resolutions is most of us set a goal of change, not growth. We often focus on measurable results- weight loss, a degree, making an appointment with a therapist, going on that date with our crush- instead of putting our efforts into less tangible but deeper work. As 2018 turns into 2019, I wonder if you (and I!) can carve out some time to reflect on what we want in the New Year? Can we sit with our thoughts and our fears and really ask ourselves why we don’t take action towards the things we want? Are we able to make a list of what we desire and WHY it is important to us? While it’s great to resolve to join that gym or make that appointment with a therapist, it’s as crucial to meditate on why you’ve been putting it off. Maybe you are worried you’ll feel out of shape in a room full of athletes? Perhaps the idea of really opening up in therapy and facing emotions you’ve kept buried is terrifying. Those are real and valid fears and feelings. You don’t have to ignore the negative (the anxiety) in order to embrace the positive (the growth). In fact, both are necessary if you want to break through what’s been holding you back. Rip off those metaphorical tops and let it all hang out in 2019! #NewYears #NewYearsResolution #NewYearsEve #MentalHealth #MentalHealthMatters #BodyImage #WorkingOut #Therapy #Anxiety #Depression #Running #AthletaAmbassador #PowerOfShe #Meditation #FinishStrongerRacing #MyStryde

It is #bellletstalk day. What is that, you ask? It’s an amazing initiative in Canada to bring attention to mental health. (Canada, once again showing it’s awesomeness…) So, let’s talk mental heath. I missed Mental Health Monday again. Partly because I’m in Super Bowl mode; mostly because I’ve been “off” for a few weeks now. In the picture above, I look elated. On the inside that day (Monday) I was a mess. I felt fine if my mind was completely occupied, but the minute I was alone or not interacting with someone my mind raced, my heart pounded and I constantly felt on the verge of tears. Yesterday wasn’t much better. I still wasn’t sleeping well and had almost no appetite. Last night I spent some time alone. I let the feelings flood to the surface. I finally slept all night. Today the ache has dulled. It hasn’t gone away, but it’s less pervasive. That’s depression. That is anxiety. Some days are good. Some days are bad. I’m trying my best to not run from any of my feelings or push the feelings down with outside distractions like alcohol, people, work, social media, shopping, etc… but sometimes I go there. We all do. But let’s keep talking about it. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #anxiety #depression #sicknotweak
