Virginia won her second Grand Slam singles championship in 1972 at the Australian Open where she defeated the Australian Evonne Goolagong in the final. In the same year, Wade became a member of Order of the British Empire MBE in the 1973 Birthday Honours for services to Lawn Tennis.
