Raised in Kentucky, Judd grew up along with her half-sister Ashley Judd. Her mother and stepfather took her to Los Angeles in 1968 but her parents divorced in 1972.

The mother-daughter duo began the first contract with RCA Records in 1993, and since then they have published several albums under the title The Judds.
