He grew with his father Antosh Lanthimos who was a professional basketball player and also played for Pagrati B.C., Greece National Basketball Team. Talking about his education, Lanthimos graduated from Moraitis School where his father was an instructor. After knowing his ability, he dropped out everything and studied for directing at Hellenic Cinema and Television School Stavrakos (HCTSS) in Athens.
