Darryl Gerard Hickman was born on July 28, 1931, in California, USA. He was born to parents Milton and Katherine Hickman. Darryl comes from a middle-class background. His father worked at an insurance company and his mother was a housewife. Darryl grew up alongside his brother Dwayne Hickman.

He became a student at the dance school in the 1930s and then from there started his career. Hickman went to study at Paramount School in California and then from Cathedral High School. Darryl attended classes with the likes of Gene Nelson and Jackie Cooper.

He is currently 87-years-old and stands tall at a height of 5 Feet 5 Inch tall.
