Nicole Richie was born Nicole Camille Escovedo on September 21, 1981, in Berkeley, California. Her biological parents are Peter Michael Escovedo, a Percussionist and musical director, and her mother, Karen Moss, a housewife. She has an aunt named Sheila E, a musician, author, and singer.

Although being born in the family of Escovedo, she changed her surname to Richie after her parents agreed to let her move in with singer Lionel Richie when she was three years old.
