Tommy Caldwell

Tommy Caldwell is an American mountain climber who is famous for his rock-climbing feats. Also, Caldwell ascended the West Buttress, Dawn Wall, and Triple Crown of El Captain in Yosemite National Park. Tommy moved to Longs Peak, Colorado early in his career, climbing The Honeymoon is Over V, a rating of 5.13.

In the non-fiction work Over the Edge: The True Story of Four American Climbers’ Kidnap and Escape in the Central Asian Mountains, Caldwell’s traumatic experience is recounted. Tommy married twice in his life and he shares two children with wife Rebecca Pietsch.

A native of Estes Park, Colorado

Tommy Caldwell was born on August 24, 1978, in Estes Park, Colorado, the United States of America. Additionally, Tommy’s father Mike Calwell, is a professional bodybuilder, mountain guide and rock climber. While on the other hand, his mother Terry Caldwell was also a mountain guide.

Caldwell grew up in Colorado along with his sister. The family even went on annual trips to Yosemite National Park where Candwell’s love for the park and rock climbing flourished.

Loss of a Finger

In 2001, Tommy’s left index finger accidentally sawed-off much with a table saw. Doctors were able to repair the severed section. However, Caldwell decided that he did not want the useless finger with which doctors said he would never be able to climb again, and that the injured part of the finger was subsequently permanently removed.

Rock Climbing Career

Caldwell first ascents of some of the US hardest sports routes including sport routes including Kryptonite(5.15a) at the Fortress of Solitude, Colorado.  Likewise, he finished the first free ascent(FFA) od Dihedral Wall in May 2004. Along with Beth Rodden, Tommy made the third and fourth free ascents of The Nose in 2005. Initially, after two days, Caldwell completed free climbed The Nose in less than 12 hours.

Besides, Tommy and Kevin Jorgeson, a rock climber finished the first free climb of the Dawn Wall of El Captain in Yosemite National Park in January 2015. Nevertheless, Tommy was featured in the 2009 film Progression.

Together the couple shares two children as of now. They are son, Fitz Caldwell and a daughter Ingrid Wilde. The family of four currently lives in Estes Park, Colorado. Besides, there are no rumors regarding their divorce and separation.

Past Affairs

Before getting married to Rebecca Pietsch, Caldwell was married to his girlfriend Beth Rodden. Rodden is also an American rock climber famous for her ascents of hard single pitch trad routes.  Rodden was the first woman to climb 5.14a (8b+) and is one of the world’s first women to redpoint a common climb of 5.14c (8c+).

Although the couple hasn’t revealed how and when they met, the two exchanged their wedding vows in 2003. Sadly, they failed to continue their relationship for long and they divorced in 2010. Yet, the reason for their separation is still a mystery.
